Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) today announced that Toshiba shipped a new Nearline HDD record of 2.11 million units and 25.6 exabytes in 1CQ21, delivering an average capacity of 12.1TBs per unit that now exceeds the industry average.¹ Toshiba’s Nearline HDD units were up 31% Q-Q and 11% Y-Y while total exabytes shipped vaulted 47% Q-Q and 53% Y-Y.
“Toshiba’s solid execution and ramp of its Nearline HDD products in the last two years is the key behind the improvement in Toshiba’s market share in both unit and capacity shipped,” noted Ed Burns, Research Director of HDDs at IDC. “And the recent introduction of Toshiba’s 18TB (MG-09) product should position them well for positive momentum through this year and into 2022.”
Digital content is growing steadily, and according to a recent IDC Global DataSphere report, the amount of data created and replicated is on pace to reach around 180ZB by 2025.² A large percentage of the downloaded digital content is stored in datacenters scattered throughout the world, and at the core of these datacenters are Nearline HDDs, which are the most cost-effective performance storage medium available in the market.
“Despite the challenges of the CV-19 pandemic, Toshiba’s Nearline HDD average capacity has grown 38% from one year ago,” said Hiroyuki Seiki, Vice President of TAEC HDD. “This impressive achievement is a testament of the dedication and effort of every member of the HDD team, as well as our growing partnerships with cloud-scale and enterprise customers.”
As a global technology company that has been innovating in storage for years, Toshiba offers a comprehensive portfolio of HDD products that address the storage needs of enterprise, datacenter, surveillance, and client markets. Toshiba solves customer challenges with innovative HDD models focusing on four primary market segments. The AL Series focuses on the Enterprise Performance segment; the MG Series is aimed at Enterprise Capacity and Data Center needs; the MQ Series covers the broad spectrum of use cases that require Mobile Client HDDs; and the DT Series addresses the surveillance and traditional Desktop Client use cases.
