Elation Health, the clinical-first technology company powering innovation in primary care, today announced the results from its latest survey of 100 primary care physicians (PCPs), gaining a greater understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies’ implementation in healthcare, its impact on physician’s cognitive unburdening as well as how current solution benefits are meeting expectations.
According to the recent survey, 66% of PCPs believe AI has already significantly decreased their administration burden. Elation consistently found throughout the survey that approximately two out of every three PCPs had faith in AI transforming their practice over the next 12 months with some of the other notable findings including:
- Integration is vital: 65% believe AI solutions should be developed by their EHR vendor and built into workflows;
- Clinical outcomes are positive: 63% believe AI will have a meaningful impact on clinical outcomes for patients; and,
- Practice operations and efficiency improvements: 66% believe AI will significantly improve practice workflows in the next two years.
Additionally, Elation’s latest research not only found that PCPs believe AI is improving their working experience and clinical care, it also found a majority (54%) are bullish on AI’s ability to drive better financial performance for their practice over the next year. Elation’s data suggests that AI has emerged as an important tool PCPs believe make primary care practices more sustainable when integrated.
“AI scribing finally gives primary care physicians an affordable way to make greater time to care for their patients. And while it creates more space for the human experience necessary to promote better health, it also simultaneously captures more comprehensive and accurate documentation of that exchange than anything ever tried before,” said Dr. Sara Pastoor, Elation’s head of primary care advancement. “Physicians are reclaiming their personal time, reducing their stress levels, enjoying their work more, and doing all of these things with greater time to care, more accurate documentation as well as increased opportunities to grow and sustain their businesses – it’s a win, win, win!”
While most PCPs have strong hopes for AI, many still express barriers and limitations as physicians for generations have accepted medicine’s workaholic culture. Today nearly half of all physicians in America report burnout with newer practitioners pushing against outdated overwork expectations. In another study of more than 200,000 physicians across 396 organizations published by the AMA on time spent in the EHR, it found PCPs mostly using Epic are spending on average 7.3 hours in the EHR for every 8 hours of patient care time.
According to Elation’s study, for clinicians who reported AI was not reducing clinical documentation burdens, “poor integration with existing systems” was named as a top reason. This finding echoes a common industry complaint about AI’s lack of integration within EHR systems.
Elation’s study follows recent news from the company about the launch of its native AI scribing technology, Note Assist. As the first of many integrated Note Assist capabilities, Elation’s ambient AI medical scribing technology captures clinical conversations in real time, transforming clinical documentation and operating seamlessly within Elation’s EHR to incorporate key patient information.
The latest survey, conducted in September 2024 includes responses from 100 independent primary care clinicians in Elation’s network. The full survey results are available here.
