LenovoEMC Peeks Out To Release LifeLine For Iomega Storage Devices

Storage co-venture LenovoEMC, formerly known as EMC Iomega, has announced the imminent release of  the 4.0 upgrade to its LifeLine operating system. The application will run on its currently Iomega-branded network storage arrays. LenovoEMC-branded network storage devices with LifeLine 4.0 are expected to debut in May.

The company said that LifeLine 4.0, available next week as a free-of-charge download for owners of StorCenter ix and px series storage products, includes improved enterprise computing and security features for easy and efficient storing, sharing and protecting of data.

Added functionality

Designed to satisfy the needs of organisations and workgroups of all sizes, the new features allow point-in-time snapshot backups to be taken of storage volumes. These work even when the storage device is actively writing data and allow failed systems to be restored to the exact state it was in prior to the failure.

There is also the ability to use cache pools of solid-state drives (SSDs) to store frequently read and written files for rapid access. It also enables RAID data protection to be used to ensure the reliability of the cached data.

Files can be shared securely on the internet using LifeLine 4.0 which ensures that only those folders or files intended to be shared are visible and accessible online.

A special feature for rackmounted Iomega px 12-400r and 12-450r is the ability to run Linux or Windows virtual machines, each with their own virtualised hardware network cards, drives and graphics adapters.
