The purpose-built backup appliance (PBBA) market enjoyed year on year growth of 29.8 percent as of Q2 2012, continuing the upward trend, according to a report from IDC.
This market brought in roughly $657.4 million for the second quarter. The total PBBA open systems market posted $551.1 million in revenues, or 27.7 percent growth compared to the same time last year. IDC notes that shipped PBBA capacity reached 273,082 terabytes, representing 32.2 percent growth in one year.
EMC remained top dog, taking the lion’s share of the market at 62.2 percent for the quarter – or $409 million in revenues. It was trailed by IBM, Symantec, HP, and Quantum, as in the below table, although Symantec made significant gains with NetBackUp.
Both IBM experienced growth with mainframe PBBAs, while HP introduced new products that complemented its StorOnce deduplication and optimisation software, IDC said.
“The customer adoption of PBBA systems has intensified as customers use these systems to improve their backup windows and recovery time objectives,” Robert Amatruda, research director for data protection and recovery at IDC, said.
