Amazon has expanded its services with the launch of Appstore in the UK, offering applications to Android customers and tools for developers.
The online retail giant has sold millions of apps through its US Amazon Appstore, and is now rolling it out throughout parts of Europe, for access through Android devices.
Apps available are similar to the ones found on Google’s own Play app shop, featuring the usual games from the likes of Rovio as well as a variety of localised content. The Appstore will also feature the Amazon buying staples such as personalised recommendations and one click payments.
Amazon Web Services will also enable developers to build apps and games, with access to GameCircle for features such as leaderboards, and marketing such as Free App of the Day.
Jim Adkins, Vice President of Amazon Appstore, said that the Appstore expansion will build on the success already seen in the States.
“Customers in the US have purchased millions of apps, games, in-app items and subscriptions since the store launched last year, and we’ve received great feedback about discovery features like Free App of the Day,” said Adkins.
“Amazon has spent years developing innovative features that help customers find and discover the products that are right for them and have applied that know-how to the Amazon Appstore. We’re delighted to extend that experience to our European customers.”
