Dell sticks head in the cloud with Desktone DaaS and SAP offering

PC maker turned IT services provider Dell has announced further details of its expansion into cloud services.

The Texas firm unveiled a virtual desktop service alongside Desktone today aimed at simplifying virtualisation for Desktop as a Service (DaaS).

The new service, Desktop Virtualization Solutions (DVS) Simplified DaaS, will feature Desktone’s multi-tenant DaaS platform on Dell’s data-centres, and will be soon rolled out throughout the US and EMEA

The DaaS offering will mean the ability to get going with VDI deployments quickly and simply, with the ability to easily support mobile and remote workers.   Through the magic of cloud computing it will be possible to scale for seasonal usage too.

“With DaaS, customers can get started quickly with no minimum purchases or complex deployments, making the transition easy,” said Steve Lalla, Vice President for End User Computing Solutions at Dell.

The firm also announced its new list of SAP cloud services, helping to move the two firms’ customers into the cloud.

Two offerings have been unveiled to tempt customers into cloud models.  The first is the Dell Cloud Starter Kit which provides 60 day access to the Dell cloud environment.

The offer includes the compute power equivalent to 8,000 SAP Application Performance Standard (SAPS) unit of measure, using VMware’s vCloud Datacenter Service.

The other service is the Dell Cloud Development Kit for SAP Solutions, which provides 32,00 SAPS of virtual computing capacity for more advanced customers, will also use Dell’s Boomi technology and provides further upgraded benefits offer the starter package.  The Development Kit allows for a year’s access, and Dell is hoping that it will be able to lure more business into cloud computing by leveraging SAP software.

“Dell and VMware have a proven track record of providing enterprise-class, secure clouds to organizations of all sizes,” said Kevin Jones, vice president, Dell Services.

“Now we’re giving customers running SAP solutions an easy, low-risk way to take advantage of all the benefits of the cloud in a way that fits seamlessly into their existing IT environments.”

In more Dell announcements today the firm  said it  has signed an agreement to offer integrated systems alongside opensourcerers Red Hat.  This will mean the ability to customise Dell Precision and PowerEdge platforms with Red Hat Linux and JBoss middleware offerings.
