Asigra expands European reach

Asigra, a cloud-based data protection service provider, has expanded its European reach through a deal with Layer 8 IT-Services, a Swedish provider of managed services in the areas of storage, networking, virtualisation and security.

Layer 8 was founded in 2010 by three IT consultants, one of whom had had direct experience with Asigra’s Cloud Backup product. As a result the company said it decided to build its data protection services around Cloud Backup, bundling it with other products to target various sectors.

Service backbone

“We decided from the start to make it the backbone of our data protection service offering,” stated Layer 8 chief executive Johan Tungström.

Layer 8 said it is looking to offer cost-effective packages that allow companies to take advantage of the cloud service model, with benefits such as freeing up space, reducing budget and IT burdens and introducing remote management.

Toronto-based Asigra has been in the backup and recovery business for more than 25 years and now offers its services to managed service providers as well as directly to end-user organisations.

Cloud-based backup services have shown steady growth in recent years, with large providers continuing to beef up their offerings to take advantage of the market. Xerox recently introduced a service built around software from Quantum, while last month open-source network backup software maker Zmanda formed an alliance with Google on a deal to offer a new cloud data-backup service.
