Vtesse offers short-term co-location contracts to reduce Olympics disruption

Data centre provider Vtesse Cirrus is to offer short-term service contracts at its facility just outside London to help companies avoid restrictions imposed by the Olympic and Paralympic Games later this year.

Vtesse Cirrus’ offer is aimed at companies operating within the Olympic Route Network (ORN), a 109-mile network of roads within London that will be affected by strict access restrictions before and during the Olympic Games.

A similar restricted area will operate during the Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September.

Logistics challenge

These restrictions could pose serious challenges for companies’ communications infrastructure, Vtesse Cirrus claims, making routine network maintenance impossible while potentially also affecting access to data centres.

“Businesses relying on data centres located in or close to the Olympic and Paralympic ‘contagion zone’ will be crossing their fingers this summer, as it simply will not be possible to repair any network outages in the area,” said Aidan Paul, chief executive of parent company Vtesse. “Indeed, with vast crowds descending on the Capital, it will be hard enough to even get to a data centre in the area.”

As a solution the company is offering six-month contracts at its Tier III+ facility in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, which will provide co-location services as well as office space.

The facility is 21 miles from London City and 32 miles from Docklands, and was recently outfitted with a new Tyrrell Systems offering that allows clients to monitor their own suites on site, over the Internet or from a mobile device.

“We’ve already received considerable interest from London-based businesses which simply can’t let the Olympics risk the continuity of their data centre operations,” Paul said. “Our new short term service contracts have been designed with these firms in mind.”
