A total of 39 bodies are attempting to define standards for computing, leading to delays in adoption and raising fear and confusion in the minds of enterprises and the channel.
That emerged at the launch of Channel Biz at the Soho Hotel in London this morning, during a debate between senior analysts Clive Longbottom of Quocirco and Malcolm Penn of Future Horizons.
The debate centred around a report commissioned by Netmedia that suggested the channel was at best lukewarm about cloud computing and at worst indifferent.
Longbottom said that the wrangle over cloud standards meant that businesses were getting confused messages from vendors, with each having a different view of what cloud computing meant.
Penn said that large companies in particular weren’t nimble enough to re-invent themselves to take advantage of new technology. The challenge technology posed meant companies had to adapt to survive.
The survey showed that a third of channel players proposed to hire more sales staff in order to become more competitive. But Longbottom said that rather than hire more staff, companies needed to become more efficient in using the resources they already had.
